    On the variable capacity property of CC/DS-CDMA systems

    A complete complementary code based direct sequence code division multiple access (CC/DS-CDMA) system has been proposed recently as a potential candidate for beyond third generation (B3G) wireless communications. This paper addresses the issues that design of efficient code assignment schemes should be based on a flexible physical layer support, which is extremely important for emerging cross-layer designs in future wireless applications. The study in this paper considers a CC/DS-CDMA system with multiple time slots, three traffic classes and two dynamic code-flock assignment schemes, namely random assignment (RA) and compact assignment (CA). Simulation results show that the CC/DS-CDMA system has variable capacity property (VCP), which is sensitively affected by different code-flock assignment schemes. In general, CA can offer lower blocking probability, whereas RA can offer a larger mean system capacity and higher throughput when offered traffic is heavy

    Singularity-sensitive gauge-based radar rainfall adjustment methods for urban hydrological applications

    Gauge-based radar rainfall adjustment techniques have been widely used to improve the applicability of radar rainfall estimates to large-scale hydrological modelling. However, their use for urban hydrological applications is limited as they were mostly developed based upon Gaussian approximations and therefore tend to smooth off so-called "singularities" (features of a non-Gaussian field) that can be observed in the fine-scale rainfall structure. Overlooking the singularities could be critical, given that their distribution is highly consistent with that of local extreme magnitudes. This deficiency may cause large errors in the subsequent urban hydrological modelling. To address this limitation and improve the applicability of adjustment techniques at urban scales, a method is proposed herein which incorporates a local singularity analysis into existing adjustment techniques and allows the preservation of the singularity structures throughout the adjustment process. In this paper the proposed singularity analysis is incorporated into the Bayesian merging technique and the performance of the resulting singularity-sensitive method is compared with that of the original Bayesian (non singularity-sensitive) technique and the commonly used mean field bias adjustment. This test is conducted using as case study four storm events observed in the Portobello catchment (53 km2) (Edinburgh, UK) during 2011 and for which radar estimates, dense rain gauge and sewer flow records, as well as a recently calibrated urban drainage model were available. The results suggest that, in general, the proposed singularity-sensitive method can effectively preserve the non-normality in local rainfall structure, while retaining the ability of the original adjustment techniques to generate nearly unbiased estimates. Moreover, the ability of the singularity-sensitive technique to preserve the non-normality in rainfall estimates often leads to better reproduction of the urban drainage system's dynamics, particularly of peak runoff flows

    Large earthquakes create vertical permeability by breaching aquitards

    Hydrologic responses to earthquakes and their mechanisms have been widely studied. Some responses have been attributed to increases in the vertical permeability. However, basic questions remain: How do increases in the vertical permeability occur? How frequently do they occur? Is there a quantitative measure for detecting the occurrence of aquitard breaching? We try to answer these questions by examining data from a dense network of ∼50 monitoring stations of clustered wells in a sedimentary basin near the epicenter of the 1999 M7.6 Chi-Chi earthquake in western Taiwan. While most stations show evidence that confined aquifers remained confined after the earthquake, about 10% of the stations show evidence of coseismic breaching of aquitards, creating vertical permeability as high as that of aquifers. The water levels in wells without evidence of coseismic breaching of aquitards show tidal responses similar to that of a confined aquifer before and after the earthquake. Those wells with evidence of coseismic breaching of aquitards, on the other hand, show distinctly different postseismic tidal response. Furthermore, the postseismic tidal response of different aquifers became strikingly similar, suggesting that the aquifers became hydraulically connected and the connection was maintained many months thereafter. Breaching of aquitards by large earthquakes has significant implications for a number of societal issues such as the safety of water resources, the security of underground waste repositories, and the production of oil and gas. The method demonstrated here may be used for detecting the occurrence of aquitard breaching by large earthquakes in other seismically active areas

    Taxonomic revision of lizards from the Paleocene deposits of the Qianshan Basin, Anhui, China

    Although the Late Cretaceous lizard fauna of China and Mongolia is relatively well-known, information on Paleocene lizards from the same region is currently limited. Several species of lizards have been reported from the Paleocene Wanghudun and Doumu formations of Qianshan Basin on the basis of fragmentary specimens, namely Agama sinensis Hou, 1974, Anhuisaurus huainanensis Hou, 1974, Anqingosaurus brevicephalus Hou, 1976, Changjiangosaurus huananensis Hou, 1976, Qianshanosaurus huangpuensis Hou, 1974, and Tinosaurus doumuensis Hou, 1974. In this paper, we review all the reported material of these taxa with the aid of new technology, including CT scanning, and according to current views of squamate relationships and classification. Revised descriptions and classifications are given for each taxon, leading to changes in our understanding of faunal composition. This, in turn, reveals greater morphological and ecological diversity among the Paleocene lizards of the Qianshan Basin, including the occurrence of a varaniform (IVPP V 22767), and the reinterpretation of Anqingosaurus as a possible burrower. Further work on the Paleocene Qianshan lizards is ongoing and the discovery of new specimens may help to solve the puzzles these strange lizards have posed

    Influences of the disease resistance conferred by the individual transgenes, Pi-d2, Pi-d3 and Xa21, on the transgenic rice plants in yield and grain quality

    To research possible influences of the disease resistance conferred by different trans-resistance genes on the transgenic rice plants in their yields and grain quality, three transgenic rice lines, including two with the resistance genes Pi-d2 and Pi-d3, respectively, for rice blast, and one with the resistance gene Xa21 for rice bacterial blight, which all showed the highest resistance to their respective pathogen races, were used to analyze and measure their respective characters in yield and grain quality as compared to those of the transgenic control line with the empty vector that was used to transfer Pi-d2, Pi-d3 and Xa21, respectively. Both yield and grain quality of all three transgenic materials with the respective trans-resistance genes decreased significantly. Grain weight per plant of Pi-d2, Pi-d3 and Xa21 transgenic individuals decreased by 7.7%, 29.6 and 44.4%, respectively, compared to the control. Grain quality of Pi-d2 and Pi-d3 transgenic plants were both the third class according to the Industrial Standard, ‘Grain Quality of Edible Rice Variety’ and one class worse than that of the control, but the third class still belongs to edible grains. However, grain quality of Xa21 transgenic plants was too bad to be edible

    Structural Simplification of Bedaquiline: the Discovery of 3-(4-(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl)phenyl)quinoline Derived Antitubercular Lead Compounds

    Bedaquiline (BDQ) is a novel and highly potent last-line antituberculosis drug that was approved by the US FDA in 2013. Owing to its stereo-structural complexity, chemical synthesis and compound optimization are rather difficult and expensive. This study describes the structural simplification of bedaquiline while preserving antitubercular activity. The compound's structure was split into fragments and reassembled in various combinations while replacing the two chiral carbon atoms with an achiral linkage instead. Four series of analogues were designed; these candidates retained their potent antitubercular activity at sub-microgram per mL concentrations against both sensitive and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. Six out of the top nine MIC-ranked candidates were found to inhibit mycobacterial ATP synthesis activity with IC50 values between 20 and 40 μm, one had IC50>66 μm, and two showed no inhibition, despite their antitubercular activity. These results provide a basis for the development of chemically less complex, lower-cost bedaquiline derivatives and describe the identification of two derivatives with antitubercular activity against non-ATP synthase related targets

    SpikeTemp: an enhanced rank-order-based learning approach for spiking neural networks with adaptive structure

    This paper presents an enhanced rank - order based learning algorithm, called SpikeTemp, for Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) with a dynamically adaptive structure. The trained feed-forward SNN consists of two layers of spiking neurons: an encoding layer which temporally encodes real valued features into spatio-temporal spike patterns, and an output layer of dynamically grown neurons which perform spatio-temporal classification. Both Gaussian receptive fields and square cosine population encoding schemes are employed to encode real-valued features into spatio-temporal spike patterns. Unlike the rank-order based learning approach, SpikeTemp uses the precise times of the incoming spikes for adjusting the synaptic weights such that early spikes result in a large weight change and late spikes lead to a smaller weight change. This removes the need to rank all the incoming spikes and thus reduces the computational cost of SpikeTemp. The proposed SpikeTemp algorithm is demonstrated on several benchmark datasets and on an image recognition task. The results show that SpikeTemp can achieve better classification performance and is much faster than the existing rank-order based learning approach. In addition, the number of output neurons is much smaller when the square cosine encoding scheme is employed. Furthermore, SpikeTemp is benchmarked against a selection of existing machine learning algorithms and the results demonstrate the ability of SpikeTemp to classify different datasets after just one presentation of the training samples with comparable classification performance

    Regenerating plants from in vitro culture of Erigeron breviscapus leaves

    A protocol to efficiently achieve plant regeneration from leaf explants of Erigeron breviscapus (Compositae) has been developed. Leaf explants produced calli on Murashige and Skoog’s (1962) basal medium (MS) supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) (0.4 mM) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) (0.4-22.6 mM) under a 16-h photoperiod. Direct adventitious shoots were induced from leaf explants on MS medium containing BAP (22.2 mM) and IAA (5.7 mM) under the light treatment. The effect of the dark incubation on shoot regeneration from leaves indicated that 15 days of darkness permitted a higher regeneration frequency (82.6%) on the medium supplemented with BAP (4.4 mM) and indole-3- acetic acid (IAA) (0.6 mM). Regenerated shoots were rooted on MS medium with or without naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Plantlets were cultivatable in the greenhouse after acclimatization

    Preliminary study of a customised total knee implant with musculoskeletal and dynamic squatting simulation

    Customised total knee replacement could be the future therapy for knee joint osteoarthritis. A preliminary design of a customised total knee implant based on knee anatomy was studied in this article. To evaluate its biomechanical performance, a dynamic finite element model based on the Oxford knee rig was created to simulate a squatting motion. Unlike previous research, this dynamic model was simulated with patient-specific muscle and joint loads that were calculated from an OpenSim musculoskeletal model. The dynamic response of the customised total knee implant was simulated under three cruciate ligament scenarios: both cruciate ligaments retained, only anterior cruciate ligament removed and both cruciate ligaments removed. In addition, an off-the-shelf symmetric total knee implant with retained cruciate ligaments was simulated for comparison analysis. The customised total knee implant with both cruciate ligaments retained showed larger ranges of femoral external rotation and posterior translation than the symmetric total knee implant. The motion of the customised total knee implant was also in good agreement with a healthy knee. There were no big differences in the tibiofemoral compressive forces in the customised total knee implant model under the three scenarios. These forces were generally consistent with other experimental and simulation results. However, the customised total knee implant design resulted in larger tibiofemoral compressive force than the symmetric total knee implant after 50° knee flexion, which was caused by the larger tibiofemoral relative motion

    Induction of resistance in cucumber against seedling damping-off by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Bacillus megaterium strain L8

    Bacillus megaterium L8, a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), was isolated and evaluated for its ability to induce resistance in cucumber against seedling damping-off caused by Pythium aphanidermatum. Root-splitting challenge experiments showed that L8 treatment of cucumber roots more effectively suppressed seedling damping-off than did the control as judged by seedling survival rate (83.45 versus 31.68% at 28 days), indicating that strain L8 is capable of inducing systemic disease resistance in cucumber. To explore the potential mechanism underlying the induced systemic resistance (ISR) mediated by L8, the expression profile of several plant defense-related enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) were monitored in the roots treated with L8 or P. aphanidermatum and untreated leaves in a time course of 13 days. Levels of SOD, POD, CAT, PPO and PAL activities in the treated roots and untreated leaves of cucumber seedlings were all significantly higher as compared with the control and respectively peaked in the roots at 3, 3, 5, 5 and 5 days and correspondingly in the leaves at 5, 3, 5, 5 and 5 days post-inoculation. The enhanced expression patterns of the above enzymes following L8 or P. aphanidermatum treatment suggested that systemic induction of plant defense enzymes by L8 might account for its ability to provide effective protection for cucumber from seedling damping-off caused by the soil-borne fungal pathogen P. aphanidermatum.Key words: Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), defense enzymes, damping-off of cucumber seedlings, induced resistance
